Pixelation problems? What does that mean? These are DLP projectors, and as such the only pixel issue they should ever exhibit are dead or stuck pixels - but I wouldn't call that 'pixelation'. It sounds to me like people probably aren't running it in the native resolution, which is 1200 x 800.
If you are sending a data signal to projector in anything other than its native resolution, you're going to get an ugly and pixelated image.
The expected life of a lamp will vary based on the lamp technology and the projector; however, most projectors offer about 2000 hours. The lamp's success rate is based on a bell curve, so that a majority of (but not all) lamps will meet the lamp life hours specified.
Check that first.
As for the lifecycle issue, I suggest you use the menus to audit the amount of hours these units have been used. The optical engine of a DLP projector should last 10,000 hours at least, but an LCD optical engine will likely only last 10,000 hours (tops). Replacement lamp cost and availability is often a determining factor in projector swap-outs, with the other deciding factors being reliability and new features. This makes planning difficult. I suggest a six year max cycle. After that, lamp availability is going to start becoming an issue and power supplies will likely start to fail.

Don't buy anything with less an XGA resolution if you're stuck on 4:3 aspect ratios, and if widescreen is desired, 1920 x 1080. Stick with DLP if possible, and don't buy anything with less than 3,000 ANSI lumens.
