Many all-in-one printer manufacturers tout their devices' TWAIN compatibility, even though TWAIN doesn't have much of anything to do with printing itself -- TWAIN is a technology for scanners and other image acquisition devices. However, because all-in-one printers include scanners, the TWAIN-compatible designation gets thrown into the mix with all of their other features.

History

Before the introduction of the TWAIN standard, every scanner communicated with computers using a proprietary system. This meant that you needed special software for each scanner and that every scanner maker had to make their own software. In 1992, the industry formed the TWAIN working group to create a standard that every scanner maker could share and use. This way, different scanners could have different capabilities and still be able to use the same underlying communication protocols. Since TWAIN is standardized, other software can also use it to interface with the scanner, letting you scan directly into documents in any TWAIN-compatible software.

Manufacturers

As of May 2013, Epson, Hewlett-Packard and Kodak are all members of the organization responsible for the TWAIN standard. TWAIN also tracks Canon, Panasonic and Ricoh drivers that are compliant. However, just because a manufacturer isn't on TWAIN's list doesn't mean that it doesn't make TWAIN-compatible all-in-ones. For example, Brother, Dell and Lexmark all offer TWAIN drivers for their devices.

Networks

If you plan to network your all-in-one printer, TWAIN support is particularly valuable. Among other features, TWAIN includes the ability to control network scanners. This means that any computer on your network will be able to use a standardized driver to scan documents and to set the device's scanning parameters.

Other Printer Standards

While TWAIN isn't, technically, a printer standard, other printer standards include Apple's AirPrint, which lets iOS devices send print jobs to wireless printers without additional software or drivers. In addition, the ISO 24734 standard allows you to compare print speeds between different manufacturers. The ISO also created the 19752, 24711 and 19798 standards for cartridge lives that you can use to accurately compare your choices from various manufacturers.
